Illegal Liquor Shops Near Highways & Sensitive Public Places
Despite binding directions of the Supreme Court in State of Tamil Nadu v. K. Balu, liquor shops continued to operate near National/State Highways, hospitals, schools and residential colonies. Physical inspections on 27.06.2026 and 29.06.2026 revealed violations, but authorities failed to act on the petitioner's representation.
The PIL stands disposed of. The Court did not issue the general survey direction sought in the petition, but granted liberty to the petitioner to approach the concerned District Magistrate by representation. If such representation is made, the District Magistrate must consider it, hear all stakeholders, and take a decision in accordance with law within six weeks thereafter.

On 02.07.2026, the Bench disposed of WPPIL No.83 of 2026, granting liberty to the petitioner to submit a representation to the concerned District Magistrate regarding liquor shops allegedly running contrary to Supreme Court directives.
